A Study on the safety of Boric Acid and Sodium Borate in the Ophthalmic Solutions

Abstract
This study was made to ascertain the safety of Boric Acid and Sodium Borate when their various concentrated solutions were applied to various PH isotonic ophthalmic solution. This experiment involved applying testing samples to abdominal injection of mice to determine LD_(50) & LD_(25), then 2-week-long oral administration of mice to determine LD_(25), and finally the eyes of albino rabbits. The following effects were thus obtained:
1. An increase in PH effects showed a relative increase in lethal does(LD_(50)) and tolerated does (LD_(25)).
2. A similar increase in lethal does and tolerated does was seen in a consecutively 2-week-long oral administion of samples appiled to mice. This phenomenon seems to be attributable to a cumulative effect. In this oral administration, the value of LD_(25) was lower than that of LD_(25) in abdominal.
3. A toxicological test showed no toxic effect in the samples appied to rabbits¢¥eyes.
